The Voladores de Papantla are
a Mexican tradition, they dance in order to please the Gods. A group of men are attached to a rope hanging from the top of a 50 feet pole. They come down from the pole, turning around with open arms and the head towards the earth. At the same time, one of them plays indian music with hand made wooden musical instruments. The flute represents the voice of birds. The “tambor” represents the voice of God. This dance is also a symbol of the 4 cardinal points. The pole represents Tlazoleotl, the godess of fertility. The main dancer, the musician, dances on top of the pole and turns first to the East, the origin of the world. Each “volador” turns 13 times around the pole. 13 circles multiplied by 4, for a total of 52 circles. According to the Mayan calendar, every 52 years make a solar cycle. And every 52 weeks make a year, that gives birth to a new sun so that life may go on.
The “voladores” risk ther lives in this spiritual gift to the gods so that the Earth is filled with joy and the new sun can come to life.”

The photo is a beautiful capture at sunset from the Puerto Vallarta malecón by photofool and it is our photo of the week here on Puerto Vallarta Satellite.

Lost at Sea from Puerto Vallarta?
April 26, 2007 | Tags: News, La Cruz | Leave a Comment
José Alfredo Torres, better known as Tartín, makes a mean ceviche in a small restaurant by the waterfront in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Nayarit (locate it on map), a fishing village on the north shore of Banderas Bay near Puerto Vallarta .
But his own experience with being lost at sea for 38 days in a small boat make him doubt the survival story of others from nearby San Blas who were picked up last August after drifting 5,500 miles and were picked up near the Marshall Islands.
The story is interesting and will give you some survival tips should this ever happen to you: Man who drifted 38 days doubts survival story.

Casa Cupula plans condo-hotel for gay men, lesbians and friends
April 26, 2007 | Tags: Gay, Hotels, Condos | Leave a Comment
I thought this press release was interesting so I thought I’d share it with you:
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico–You don’t have to be an heiress with the last name Hilton to have your own private residence in a five-star hotel. Condo-hotels have become a very popular way to buy a home in many of the top mainstream hotel resorts.
Casa Cupula, named one of the “Top 5 Most Luxurious Gay Guesthouses in North America” by the editors of Out & About, announces The Private Residences at Casa Cupula. Billed as the world’s first condo-hotel for gay men, lesbians and friends, The Residences combines the best of two worlds: the luxurious services of the award-winning Casa Cupula with the pride of ownership and potential return of a real estate investment in gay-friendly Puerto Vallarta.
Building on Casa Cupula’s successful growth, it was a natural progression for us,” stated Don Pickens, Principal of Milagro Properties LLC. “We have many guests who have purchased homes and condos here after staying with us, but they told us they regretted having to trade off Casa Cupula’s ambience and services because they wanted to buy real estate. Now we can offer the best of both worlds.”
The Residences are available in both full and fractional ownership. A fractional interest offers fully deeded ownership in perpetuity (unlike a timeshare) in four-week periods. Buyers can then keep their capital investment to a minimum but still own a luxury home of the highest quality. Community amenities include roof-top terrace with an infinity pool, use of an SUV, 24/7 security and a gym and spa, plus all of Casa Cupula’s luxuries.
No more cookie-cutter designs — each unit will be uniquely designed by some of Mexico’s most celebrated designers. Fully furnished and equipped, they include home theaters with LCD TVs and music speakers in the baths and on the terraces, dual-headed showers, in-suite laundry, air conditioning, amazing views, built-in Jacuzzis and more. Some units also include individual dipping pools and private roof-top terraces.
Also: See the full press release, locate Casa Cupula on the map.

Media Hysteria? Canada vs Mexico
April 19, 2007 | Tags: News, Crime | Leave a Comment
It’s starting to take on the feeling of a trade war or a World Cup match (if Canada was ever competitive in World Cup soccer).
Yet another story (see my article from March 30) with a lurid headline about a Canadian victim of crime in Mexico: Gunned down in Mexico, Local Man Shot Three Times; Lives to Tell Harrowing Story.
Although I do note that this story was actually in the The Star Phoenix rather than in the Canadian Media. Although maybe the Canadian media just hasn’t picked up on it yet.
There’s starting to be some anger on the boards from people living in Mexico about how their home is being portrayed. While they would no doubt agree that crime and the justice system in Mexico are problems, that seems to be the only thing that is reported, giving gringos a very warped view of Mexico.

El Autobús de Puerto Vallarta a Bucerias

This picture really captures the feeling of a local Mexican bus. Of course the 1st class intercity buses don’t have any of this character but if you take a local bus or a 2nd class bus, the drivers character will certainly stand out.
Most have the obligatory crucifix, although in some cases the playboy bunny is the icon of choice.
And why can’t American drivers make change if Latin American drivers can?
This is the photo of the week here on Puerto Vallarta Satellite!
Find it on the map: Bucerias.

Parasailers are an everpresent view from the beach in Puerto Vallarta so it is nice to see this shot from the other side.
Sure looks high up there! And it sure captures the feeling that I remember from when I’ve done it. Although I’m not sure I would’ve taken my camera.
So this is the photo of the week here on Puerto Vallarta Satellite News.
